Building Research Muscle Through Partnerships
Rankings and publication counts are outcomes — partnerships are often where the groundwork gets laid. VIT-AP recently signed an Academic & Research MoU with CSIR-IICT, the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad, one of the country's premier government research labs. Vice-Chancellor Dr. S.V. Kota Reddy framed the collaboration as an opportunity for VIT-AP faculty and students to work directly with CSIR-IICT scientists on advanced research thrust areas — the kind of applied, lab-grade exposure that's hard to replicate purely within a university campus.
On a different front, VIT-AP signed a two-year MoU with tech firm Octave in late August 2026, aimed squarely at industry-driven AI innovation. The partnership is designed to give students and faculty structured, hands-on exposure to real-world AI and machine learning problems, along with mentorship and career pathways into the tech industry — a bridge between academic research and commercial application that many universities are racing to build.

The Story That Put VIT-AP on the Map: A Payload in Orbit
Numbers and MoUs build a foundation, but one achievement in 2026 brought VIT-AP's research story into much sharper focus: a student-and-faculty-developed payload, VISWA-M, successfully reached orbit aboard Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 on July 18, 2026, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
Vikram-1's flight, known as Mission Aagaman, marked the first orbital launch from Indian soil by a private Indian company and made Skyroot Aerospace the first Indian private company to successfully place a rocket into orbit. The Government of India and ISRO both describe Vikram-1 as India's first privately developed orbital launch vehicle.
For VIT-AP, the significance lies in the payload itself. VISWA-M (VIT Satellite Wavelength Analysis Module) was designed and developed by VIT-AP students and faculty to study the solar spectrum across multiple wavelength bands. The payload was integrated as a hosted payload on SOLARAS, a nanosatellite developed by Bengaluru-based spacetech company Grahaa Space (Akshath Aerospace Private Limited).
The VIT-AP–Grahaa Space collaboration dates back to an MoU signed in 2023, making the project a multi-year academic–industry effort rather than a one-off student exercise. Grahaa Space identifies the SOLARAS deployment as Mission SIDDHI, while the Vikram-1 launch itself was designated Mission Aagaman.
That distinction matters because the achievement is not simply that a university was associated with a rocket launch. VIT-AP students and faculty were involved in developing an actual experimental space payload that travelled into orbit as part of a commercial private-space mission.
For a university whose Amaravati campus began its journey in 2017, it is a notable example of how research, industry collaboration, and hands-on student projects can converge in a real-world space mission.
It's a rare distinction for any Indian university to have a student-built payload reach orbit-class flight, and it reflects the same research culture visible in VIT-AP's publication and partnership numbers: an institution investing seriously in applied, project-based research rather than purely theoretical output.
